Fostering Good “Katma”

Not sure you’re ready for the long-term commitment of pet ownership? In need of extra good “katma” for your dogma? It’s time to consider fostering!  Not only will you benefit from the joy of a snuggly, playful cuddle-buddy but you will also be helping a cat in need.
Hundreds of animals at the Animal Care and Control are put to sleep every day due to lack of space or money. By fostering a cat, you will save a life and reap the rewards of the good “katma” that comes with it!  Watch this video of Harriet one of A Tail's fosters.

Rescued from the euthanasia list and the city kill shelters, these animals were someone’s pets and now are homeless. If you can foster a couple kittens or adult cat you will be saving an animal's life.
Cats and dogs, former pets, are abandoned by their owner.
Please consider fostering and you will be saving one life. And they show their appreciation becoming a wonderful furry companion!

Adoption events are held a few times a month where we try to get your foster pet adopted. This is a great way to have a pet in your life without the permanent commitment. A wonderful way to give a loving animal/companion a home until he or she finds a forever home.

If you travel for business or are here in NYC as an expat this is a great way to bring some fun and happiness into your life while living here in NYC.

This is no cost to you except for food and love. Fostering can be as little as a few weeks or months.

Jen a 1 1/2 year old pup will be put to sleep.

We learned that a few friendly dogs were sent to the ACC in the middle of an individual trying to place them. One of these dogs we are trying to help, her name is Jen. She is 1 1/2 years old. She receives great ratings in her SAFER test at the shelter and she is a total doll.  She was meant to die Monday, Jan 30th in the morning. We called in and we have 48 hours to find her a home or raise enough money to pay for boarding.
As a rescuer we see so many animals that are dying every day because they catch a simple cold or there is not enough space or funding to feed them.  It is extremely frustrating. I don't even look at the lists we receive because it is heartbreaking to know that these cats and dogs, someone's pet, will die because their owner was irresponsible.  Already this year we have rescued 4 cats that were found outside. One of them many of you know, Lee, a 4 month kitten who's ears fell off from frostbite. How can a human do this. Leave a kitten outside, or throw him outside.

Jen and her story fell into our lap and we are now trying to do everything to save her. We are trying to find a foster home. One person was interested but her roommates said no. If you can donate anything it will be used to board her until we find a foster or permanent home.  Don't let Jen die because some human kicked her out.

I am a co-founder of A Tail at a Time. My 3 cats and one foster cat would not be happy with Jen. Our other co-founder also has too many foster cats. Jen gets along with other dogs, we don't know her history with cats. to help http://www.causes.com/causes/572337-don-t-let-jen-die?recruiter_id=91167444

In case you wanted company for a few weeks

Ben is a seven year old mellow orange tabby who's foster is going out of town for a bit.  He just needs a place to crash until June 24th.  Can you look after him?  He's declawed so you don't even have to think about your furniture.

If you or any of your friends have been thinking about fostering but weren't sure if it was right for you, this is a great way to test it out!  Email info@atailatatime.org.  Thank you!

Positions Available

We have new volunteer positions available!  Do you love animals but can't have pets?  Are you a student who needs community service hours?  Interested in learning more about animals or helping out more?  We are looking to fill the following volunteer positions:

Adoption counselor -- An adoption counselor visits the home of a potential adopter, sometimes with the new cat or kittens in tow.  During the home visit the counselor gives the Adoption Seminar, a short talk that teaches new pet owners about proper nutrition, health, and other important aspects to having a new pet.  Adoption counselors also follow up with new adoptive parents to see how things are going.  Training is provided.

Foster mentor --
A foster mentor is a contact for new fosters in case they have questions or concerns.  A foster mentor provides guidance, tips on how to take good photos of the animal up for adoption, how to keep the animal safe, and information on behavior and health.  This is a position for someone who has experience with foster animals.

Transport --
-This person ferries cats and kittens to new homes, to and from foster homes, events, and vet appointments.  When we need transport we send out an alert and whoever is available offers help. Notice is anywhere from 2 days to a few hours. We're looking to add names to our email list!  Can we add yours?

Spay/Neuter Coordinator -- This position is great for someone who is great with data, records and is really organized.  The spay/neuter coordinator maintains records of which animals have been spayed/neutered, who need to get fixed, when they're due to get fixed, et cetera.  The S/N coordinator also keeps in touch with adopters to notify them of upcoming surgeries and to schedule appointments with our vet. 90% of this job is done over the phone and computer.

If interested or you have any questions, please email friends@atailatatime.org

And remember ... THERE WILL BE KITTENS!

P.S.  We still need volunteers to cover shifts at our adoption event tomorrow.  Can you come spend an hour with us?  Email friends@atailatatime.org!

Looking for Foster Families

Welcome to Spring - a.k.a Kitten Season.  This is the time of year when unaltered cats give birth to litters of kittens and the kill list at the local shelters explode.  This means that many rescuers begin only pulling kittens from the shelters, leaving the adult cats to die.  A Tail At A Time pulled two adult cats this weekend and they need foster homes!

This is Frisky.  He looks terrified in the photo because he is.  He'd just been relinquished by a family who could no longer afford the regular costs of owning a cat.  Frisky loves all people of all shapes, sizes and ages.  He's 9.9 pounds and only 11 months old. He's never been around other animals, so he'll probably do best in a home where he's the only animal.

This beauty is Roz, a gray tiger/Maine Coon who was found as a stray.  She's two years old, 7.4 pounds, and looking forward to having a safe, warm place to sleep.  She's not feral -- she was most likely abandoned.

If you have room in your heart and your home to take in either of these cats as a foster, or a foster-to-adopt, or if you know someone who might be interested in lending these kitty's a little love, please email us at info@atailatatime.org or you can visit our website, www.atailatatime.org, for more information.

P.S. We're now official members of the Mayor's Alliance of NYC!  Congratulations to A Tail At A Time!

Nanan, beautiful black lab

"Nanan" a gorgeous, deaf, 10 year old lab is at the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League in Ashtabula, OH.  She's been sitting in the shelter since June 2009 -- that's more than eight months!

She is a very sweet dog and she deserves to be in a home living out her final years in comfort, with a family who loves her!  Because she is deaf, she needs to be somewhere where her people know not to startle her or sneak up from behind -- probably best that she not be around small children for this reason.

If you would like to help Nanan or know of someone who might, please contact Tina Hayes at addedtouch@roadrunner.com.  Transport is available anywhere in the U.S.

Looking for a little love in your life?

We've talked about fostering on this blog before, and it will likely be a topic that will come up regularly. The reason? Fostering is one of the most important ways you can help save NYC's homeless animals. We can't rescue if we don't have a place for the animals to live, so that's where fostering comes in.

Like foster care for children in need, foster care for cats and dogs works the same way. We provide all medical care, you feed the little buggers and give them lots of love. Fostering is great for people who want a pet but aren't sure they're ready for a long-term commitment or it can be a great way to find which animal is right for you. Many people foster until they meet their soul-pet.

Right now we have several cats and kittens looking for safe, loving foster homes. One of our fosters has about 15 cats in her apartment, but that's not fair to her or the cats, so it's time to move some out. If you or someone you know would be able to take two or three kittens, it would be wonderful!

Bishop, a gorgeous two-year-old russian blue is coming in from Connecticut. He has a possible forever home, but he needs a foster home until his adoption is final. It might be a very quick foster or it could be a foster situation with an unknown end date. Bishop is neutered, fiv felv neg and gets along with other cats.

We're also in need of a foster home for a five-month-old black and white tuxedo who was found in a basement. The woman who found him was given one day to place him before he is taken to Animal Care & Control. She has not been able to find him a home.

Can you help? Email info@atailatatime.org for more information.

Save a life! Foster a homeless animal and always opt to adopt.

Tuxedos for Christmas

A note from Tracey:

Of course we wouldn't be talking about a real tuxedo suit. We are talking about 5 tuxedo cats on the euth list tonight. All for space, no space apparently, and all from the Bronx where the Dept of Health says our city does not need a shelter. AND they are all under age 5.

Lots of other colours too. If you think you can take one for foster, they are SUPER CUTE!

FOSTERS ARE DESPERATELY NEEDED

Fostering is a great way to save an animal's life and also test out an animal to see if you want to adopt.
All of our animals our rescues and all of them were someone’s pet at one time. They deserve a safe, loving home.  Many of them are found outside and given to the local shelter.  Of course this person thinks they are being a good Samaritan. Maybe they are, maybe not. There is an 80% chance this animal will end up on the euthanasia list. There is not enough space or he might catch a cold while at the shelter. Once a cat or dog is sick they won't be adoptable, this is a cold, the sniffles. He or she then goes on the euthanasia list. It is so heartbreaking to see this everyday. 10 to sometimes 50 animals dying every morning.  How can you help? Fostering is the best way.  Our fostering program is free.

WHAT DO YOU DO?  give love, food, and a safe home.

WHAT WE DO: responsible for any medical expenses.
*hold adoption events two to 3 times a month
* post the foster on a variety of online sites.
If you are interested please contact us:
info@atailatatime.org or 917-216-1748

If you can't foster there are other things you can do.
Choose to adopt an animal not buy. Every animal that is purchased is one more killed at a shelter.
Promote animal adoptions.
Volunteer - spending time with an animal makes him or her so much happier. He or she is in a cage all day long. Those 30 minutes or more of playing or petting makes them happpier. People adopt happier animals.
Everybody is attracted to the cat or dog sticking their paw out of the cage, that pet is happy. Unfortunately noone wants the cat curled up scared in the back of the cage.

And most of all promote spay/neuter. Less animals born, less animals will be killed for space.
