A kitten found outside with a herniated bladder. Meet Miguel.
Miguel was rescued from our co-founder's neighborhood where he was a favorite of a person, Miguel, who has fed outdoor cats for more than twenty years. He told us that Miguel had broken his leg at one point. When we took him to our vet he could not find any signs of a fracture but discovered that his bladder had herniated through his back just above his tail. Most likely he was kicked in that area.
The surgery was $500 but is well worth it! Miguel is so young (7 months old) and is such a sweet little black kitten who deserves a loving home.
He is still at Narrows Hospital.
Miguel spent an extra week at the vet because of a slight fever and to monitor drainage from the surgery. He is now recovering nicely in a foster home. He has started to play periodically again and is eating well. He should return to state of good health in the next few weeks. Next stop, looking for a purrmanent home.
Your donation helps us continue to help animals like Miguel. Kitties find outside depend solely on public donations.
If you would prefer call Narrows Clinic to give (718-238-5055).

LEE NEEDS YOU, HE LOST HIS EARS!
Lee lost his ears when he was neglected and found outside in January 2011 in Brooklyn NY. He was only 3 months old. He has worn a cone for many weeks and is dying to take it off. But we can't because we have to wait till the scabs heel over. He scratches and the scabs bleed. Once they heal he will go back to Narrows Animal Hospital, Dr. Giagnola, and he will have a second surgery to remove the scar tissue and assess the internal damage. We desperately need funds for this.
Pets are for life, they are not disposable.

Positions Available
We have new volunteer positions available! Do you love animals but can't have pets? Are you a student who needs community service hours? Interested in learning more about animals or helping out more? We are looking to fill the following volunteer positions:
Adoption counselor -- An adoption counselor visits the home of a potential adopter, sometimes with the new cat or kittens in tow. During the home visit the counselor gives the Adoption Seminar, a short talk that teaches new pet owners about proper nutrition, health, and other important aspects to having a new pet. Adoption counselors also follow up with new adoptive parents to see how things are going. Training is provided.
Foster mentor -- A foster mentor is a contact for new fosters in case they have questions or concerns. A foster mentor provides guidance, tips on how to take good photos of the animal up for adoption, how to keep the animal safe, and information on behavior and health. This is a position for someone who has experience with foster animals.
Transport -- -This person ferries cats and kittens to new homes, to and from foster homes, events, and vet appointments. When we need transport we send out an alert and whoever is available offers help. Notice is anywhere from 2 days to a few hours. We're looking to add names to our email list! Can we add yours?

Spay/Neuter Coordinator -- This position is great for someone who is great with data, records and is really organized. The spay/neuter coordinator maintains records of which animals have been spayed/neutered, who need to get fixed, when they're due to get fixed, et cetera. The S/N coordinator also keeps in touch with adopters to notify them of upcoming surgeries and to schedule appointments with our vet. 90% of this job is done over the phone and computer.
If interested or you have any questions, please email friends@atailatatime.org
And remember ... THERE WILL BE KITTENS!
P.S. We still need volunteers to cover shifts at our adoption event tomorrow. Can you come spend an hour with us? Email friends@atailatatime.org!

Monday Meow
Hazel in the sun
Hazel is a beautiful, friendly and playful tabby. She became a mom at an early age, raised and weaned her kittens, and is now looking for a home of her own. Still just a kitten herself, she is currently living with a dog and loves to cuddle with her humans. When I first met Hazel she immediately started rubbing her head against my hand, always a good sign.

Monday Meow
Buddy is a super sweet nine-month-old kitten. He is your typical orange tabby -- friendly, loveable, affectionate and playful. Did we mention gorgeous? He loves to sit with you while you read or watch TV, but he prefers a sofa cushion to a lap. He gets along well with other cats, yet he's also independent enough to be an only pet. Right now he's being being fostered with Pippy and they get along great! Fully vetted, he's to be your best Buddy.

Weekly Feature
Hazel is a ten-month old kitten who had a litter of her own kittens just seven weeks ago. She's a wonderful mama and a wonderful pet. She's very affectionate, friendly, playful and loves to be petted and cuddled.
Oooh, yeah... right there... little to the left... purrrrrrfect!
Right now Hazel is living in a foster home with her daughter, Bailey.

Snack time!
(Bailey eats regular kitten food, but she nurses for comfort.)
This beautiful mama would make a great addition to just about any family. For more information about Hazel, Bailey, or any of our other adoptable cats and kittens, visit our website at www.atailatatime.org or email info@atailatatime.org.

Jay
Jay is a young cat who was pulled from the kill list three weeks ago. She was released without being spayed because she was too sick for surgery. Low and behold, just a few weeks after A Tail got her, we found several small lumps in her belly. Several small lumps that jump and squirm and wiggle. Either she's been probed by aliens or she's going to have kittens!!

Weekly Feature
Sookie is a beautiful dilute tortie who is only a year old. She enjoys cramming her body into very small spaces and chirping loudly to get your attention.
Sookie is shy because she came out of a hoarding situation, but give her a little bit of time and she'll open up. Talk to her when she starts chirping and you'll find she can talk for hours. I'm sure this pretty girl has a lot to tell whoever decides to take her home.
Recently Sookie met two motherless kittens and to everyone's surprise she adopted them as if they were her own. She's particularly bonded with Steve, a two month old spotted heartbreaker.

Featured Adoptable
You may recognize Karina from last week's featured adoptable. She's being featured again this week because she really is an awesome cat who deserves a little extra love. Karina's a fighter. She was hit by car when she was a kitten and instead of sitting around feeling sorry for herself she taught herself to walk on two legs. She moves so well you won't even notice she's not using her hind legs. She's also a lover -- she wants to be petted and stroked, she wants a warm lap to curl up in, and she wants someone to play with. She's a good girl and she deserves a great home.
If you or someone you know might be interested in meeting Karina, visit our website www.atailatatime.org or email us at info@atailatatime.org for more information.

Uptown Cats
By 'cats' I mean 'kittens'. This weeks Featured Adoptables are twinsies!
Suki Ziggy
These kittens were trapped in Harlem with their mother and their siblings. So they aren't really twins, their part of a set of quadruplets, but who's getting technical? The point is that they are beautiful and sweet and in need of a home.
Suki is mild-mannered, sugar and spice and everything nice. Ziggy is a real firecracker. They were both very shy with people at first, but they're slowly coming out of their shells and showing their true personalities. You might remember Ziggy from Saturday's With Ziggy. He stole my heart weeks ago and if you give either of these kitties a chance, they'll certainly steal yours.

Your Weekly Cute Overload
This is Eden. She came to one of our last adoption events with her daddy and her little brother. They can't have a kitty for good reason (Mommy is very allergic to cats), but Eva sure did love snuggling up with our adoptables!
She and Ashley The Kitten were both a little scared of each other at first, but they took their time, moved slowly and gently, and before we knew it they were best pals.
This Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. A Tail At A Time will be at Petqua (2604 Broadway, between 98th and 99th Streets) with several of their adoptables. If you've been longing to hear a sweet little purr, come spend the day with our kitties! We're looking for volunteers, foster homes and forever homes.
For more information visit www.atailatatime.org or email info@atailatatime.org.

Kittens!
The last post was a little grumpy, I know, but I get so upset when I hear about animal hoarding situations. This one especially rankled because if that woman had taken her original two cats to any one of the free spay/neuter clinics in this city the entire thing could have been avoided.
That being said, we now have three new beautiful, adorable, fuzzy fuzz-balls who need forever homes. I would like to introduce you to Swizzle, Prod and Nod*:
How can you ever survive such cuteness?

*Not their real names. I don't know their real names yet.
UPDATE: The mama-cat is Serafina and the kittens are Ruby, Apollo and Melanie.

Saturday's With Ziggy
Last Saturday I spent the day with one of the sweetest, gentlest, handsomest kittens I've ever met. Ziggy spent over two hours zipped into my sweatshirt, curled against my heart. Of course, whenever a potential adopter walked by, I unzipped just enough so Ziggy could say hi:
For someone who's really a dog person, Ziggy stole my heart. I knew I was going to spend the day playing with cats, that's what the volunteers do at an adoption event. But I hadn't expected to have so much fun. Ed and Sam and everyone at Petqua made us feel so welcome and the more I work with all of the people who make up A Tail At A Time, the more grateful I am that I've gotten involved with this rescue. This last week has been crazy with work and everything, but one of the loveliest things running through my head has been the day I spent last Saturday, volunteering for A Tail At A Time. It was the highlight of my week.
A post is coming soon with the photos and stories of all of the cats who were at the event. Six of them were adopted, by the way! Isn't that great news? Six of our adoptables found homes thanks to last weeks adoption event. In the meantime, I wanted to let you know that the next adoption event is January 23, 2010 at Petqua, from noon to five p.m.:

Mother and Child(ren)
This mother (three-years-old, mild-mannered, negative for FeLV) and her four babes were pulled from the Animal Care & Control euth list this past Saturday, December 19. They were to be euthanized immediately because they have ring worm. Unfortunately, animals that require extra medical care are often euthanized, not because it isn't worth it to care for them, but because there are no extra funds to do so. This is also the reason kittens and puppies are the first to go - it's more expensive to care for them than it is to care for adult animals.
These cats are safe now, but they need a foster or forever home as soon as possible. Rescued along with them was a four-week-old black kitten who also has ring worm and also needs a foster or forever family.
If you can open your home and your heart for this family, email info@atailatatime.org. We take care of all the medical expenses, you provide meals and love.
Thank you! And always opt to adopt!
